Situated on the east coast of South Africa just north of the vibrant Durban city is one of the greatest coastlines in the world. Umhlanga's first beach cottage was built in 1869 on a rocky site overlooking the sea.  The reflective roof of the cottage was used as a beacon by passing ships to navigate safely around Umhlanga's rocky coastline.  In the 1930s the cottage was transformed into the Oyster Box Hotel.  Finally a distinctive red and white lighthouse was erected in 1953.  Since the 1920's Umhlanga has been the preferred area for locals to visit during their holidays.
